Why Nails Matter Too
Nails are an often overlooked maintence grooming need for Lowchen. Why? They grow so inredibly fast. Faster than other breeds I have worked with.
Weekly trims become nessecary to keep them short. But are you wondering what the benefits of keeping those nails short are?
1. Prevents Pain and Discomfort
Long nails can press into the floor when a dog walks, pushing the nail back into the nail bed. This can cause pain, soreness, or even limping.
2. Prevents Joint and Posture Issues
Dogs may change the way they walk to avoid pressure on long nails. Over time, this can lead to:
Misaligned joints
Muscle strain
Arthritis
3. Reduces the Risk of Injury
Long nails are more likely to:
Get caught on carpet, furniture, or outdoor terrain
Tear or split, which can be very painful and may require vet care
4. Improves Traction
Short nails help dogs get better grip and traction, especially on slippery floors. Long nails can cause slipping or reduced stability
5. Protects Your Home and People
Long nails can scratch hardwood floors or snag upholstery.
They can also scratch people—especially children—during play.
6. Makes Future Trims Easier
The "quick" (the blood vessel inside the nail) can grow longer if nails are left untrimmed. Regular trimming keeps the quick short, making future trims safer and less stressful.
